Dennou Coil was the first thing I caught up with following my “break,” and it has been one of the most engaging series I have ever seen, let alone this year. The last nine or so episodes have left me at a loss for words. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the same effect has carried over to the keyboard, where I find that I don’t want to say much about it.
Yet.
Basically, I want to see Dennou Coil to its conclusion first. One can cherry-pick the chases and the fights for moments of greatness, but Dennou Coil is too cohesive to be considered as anything other than an experience. There has been a string of speed releases, but Ureshii gets my vote and I’ll wait for the last two episodes, and then I’ll watch it from the beginning in the span of a day or two. It’s the only way to go.
Edit: Christmas comes early! Ureshii2007!
While I’m here, episode 24 brings back memories. Its title is deceptive, because getting these kids to voluntarily give up their glasses is probably harder than getting a Blackberry addict to kick the habit. Parental knee-jerk reactions do not discriminate, though. Instead of, “What is this glasses business,” it was “What is this internet thing that I read about in the newspaper.” Dangerous stuff, that newspaper. And technology.
The generational gap is exacerbated when they talk down to you, as well intentioned as it may be. It wasn’t pleasant to watch, but the masters of distance made their point.

You’re doing the right thing in reserving your final judgement until you’ve finished it – the ending is superb and perfectly captures the themes surrounding the characters and the relationships between them all. It explains most of the important plot points too, while leaving one or two things suitably open-ended. I’ll leave it there in case I spoil it for you but I can only agree that this is the best show of the year!
