For fans of Dennou Coil, or The Animatrix, or both, here’s a bit of trivia.
Dennou Coil’s character designer, Takeshi Honda, also did the character design for Beyond. Not only that, they have some similarities in their premise. I haven’t seen The Animatrix at all, but it sounds similar, anyway, with children exploiting glitches in cyberspace until the machines come in and format the area.
I shot myself in the foot (metaphorically!) the other day. You can read the explanation over on the entry that went live before it should have. It’s pretty silly. One shouldn’t clean electronics while they’re powered anyway.

Hmm, Beyond was my favourite part of the Animatrix thingies (short films? not sure how to describe them). Long time since I watched any of them, though.
Now that you mention it, I can definitely see the similarities between Beyond and Dennou Coil and, like IKnight, it was one of my favorite shorts from the Animatrix too (along with “Kid’s Story” and “The Second Renaissance”). I wonder if that’s when the fundamental ideas for the show were born? Saying this, I can still hardly wait for Studio 4C’s “Genius Party”… Looks just as good as the Animatrix.
It’s been reported that Dennou Coil has been in the works for a decade, and The Matrix came out 1999. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Matrix had an influence on Dennou Coil, which in turn may have been reciprocated in Beyond a few years later. Wouldn’t that be something?
