But it’s so not happening.
I’m not one to note events related to commercial releases, but when it’s uncertainty related to 5 Centimeters Per Second, I’ll make an exception.
If you’ve been thinking about giving one of those poor R1’s a better home (alongside its older siblings, perhaps?) than a warehouse, store shelf, or bargain bin, you ought to do it sooner rather than later, but unless there’s some really panicked buying as a result of this discontinuation, I don’t see supply drying up any time soon.
Speaking of those other titles, it seems strange that Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days didn’t get axed, them being under CoMix Wave as well. Or maybe they’re also on their way out. Uncertain times, we do live in.

I couldn’t stand 5cm … left me feeling pretty down in the end…not something I look for in anime…
Both Voices and Place went out of print a while ago.
5cm is one of the best anime
@voodoomage: lol! People complain ANIME ISN’T REALISTIC but when a beautiful anime slaps them in the face with very real and painful realism they don’t like it :)
I have to say I agree with you here. 5cm per second was a masterpiece and it is unfortunate that it is being discontinued due to the current slump the industry is going through.
As a big fan of Shinkai’s work however, I would much prefer that what’s left of the supply remain at a steady level for a time rather than fans panic-buying the remaining stock and then re-selling copies on ebay for ridiculous prices.
@Day Without Me: I haven’t seen evidence implying one way or the other. Years past their release, both titles continue to be available at online retailers in both singles and a collection set. Maybe that just means that concerns are overblown.
Yay for me having a copy of 5cm and Voices. Still haven’t found out where or how to get the last film though.
I just ordered everything through Amazon. It was just convenient for me, and free shipping helped.
